In recent times, Radical Fish Games, the creator of CrossCode, is particularly active on online platforms. Along with providing various short gameplay videos, the studio is also sharing details regarding the progress of CrossCode improvements, as well as information on their new RPG, Project Terra. But what exactly does this project entail? In this article, we will try to recap the key elements of this new production, and who knows, maybe we will have the opportunity to show it to you?
The birth of Project Terra
In May 2021the independent studio, Radical Fish Gameswas undertaking a new recruiting process to hire a new concept artist for a project that was still in its infancy. The following September this first announcement, Project Terra had already counted nine months of development to its credit. In an official statement on the company’s blog, they introduced the game’s very first protagonist, Juno o’ Lira, a confident young woman with a preference for the tranquility of nature. Juno will be able to use various weapons, ranging from swords to ranged weapons.
During this period, the development team shared updates regarding theprogress of the playable prototype of Project Terra. At the same time, efforts were also being made to refine the editing tools and refine the creative vision of the project. At this point, the focus was particularly on fixing the game’s core mechanics, reflecting the studio’s priorities. Cross Code therefore gave way to Project Terra in a most nostalgic illustration.
A convincing prototype
After a hiatus since their last article, in December 2021, the team is excitedly unveiling the results of their prototype, showcasing a new graphic style in pixel art 3Da system ofinnovative animation and brand new gameplay mechanics. No release date is then defined and the name of this new RPG still remains under its provisional designation.
After a noticeable absence, the development team warmly welcomes the year 2022 and wishes a happy belated Easter. They enthusiastically announce that Project Terra production started in Februaryhighlighting the steady progress made since then.

Details of Project Terra’s progress this year include the setting up NPCs with an animated dialogue system and new cinematics. Of the significant improvements have been made to environmental graphics and editor features. Additions such as a icon editor and one UI debugger were also mentioned. Many other advances have been made, including the creation of navigation mapsd’a beacon system and entity groups, as well as editor workflow improvements.
Finally, they announce with satisfaction that they have obtained funding from the German State for the production of their new baby.
The first lines of the Project Terra universe
In August 2023, the studio proposed, on the occasion of Gamescom of that same year, a more advanced dissemination of the gameplay of the game through a few phases. These offer a first glimpse of the playing area called RFG. Careful observers will notice the new combat mechanics, both ranged and melee. Auto-aiming makes it easier to attack in combat. Enemies have more visible attack signals.
Additionally, Radical Fish Games will share the opening lines of what will build the Project Terra storyline. The game world is invaded by corruption that Juno must eliminate with its divine weapons. Development is progressing rapidly
The progress in the game is notable, if we are to believe a press release fromOctober 2022, particularly in terms of systems. Shaded texts give way to outlines, with the possibility of switching. A bitmap font adapted to the style of Project Terra is also integrated. Improvements gain in importance thanks to a kitchen system avoiding the accumulation of objects. Buffs et care are linked to food, replaceable at the next meal. The latest information we have is from April 2023. The progress of the development team has brought a host of new features to Project Terra: the menu system has been improvedincluding the equipment menu which now allows you toadd gems to improve stats et unlock special modifiers, while providing an overview of essential data. Juno, the heroine of the game, has new weapons, including a mighty hammer for slow but impactful attacks, as well as a Chakram en forme de boomerang allowing for circular ranged attacks and unique interactions with puzzle elements. The arsenal of new enemies includes a tough turtle that requires specific tactics to defeat. The game world has also expanded with a coastal fishing village providing a peaceful break, complete with scenic waterfalls that represent an example of the game’s technical advancements.
A project that seems to excite fans of Radical Fish Games
To conclude, here are these few lines. Project Terra pleasantly surprises with its well-thought-out technique. One can only be captivated by this ingenious mix of 3D and 2D which, in my humble opinion, seeks to stand out from current titles such as Octopath Traveler, while maintaining this distinctive visual progression. It’s almost as if, in the technical evolution of the JRPG, full 3D has given way to a parallel path in the multiverse, combining technological evolution with respect for the original visual aesthetics of the games that have marked our childhood.
