What is onco-sexology?

Some cancers particularly affect the sexuality of patients because of their location in the genitals, for example. But in reality, all cancers, and in particular their treatment, have consequences on sexuality, libido and pleasure. Taking this dimension into account is the specialty of onco-sexology.

Meeting a need that is still too taboo

If sexuality can sometimes be perceived as superfluous in the face of a disease such as cancer, not taking it into account sometimes worsens the quality of life of the patient, but also of his or her partner.

Appeared in recent years, onco-sexology meets a need that has remained taboo for too long. Far from being negligible, a couple’s sex life is on the contrary an important part of support during treatment and of reconstruction followingwards.

How to consider the patient’s body as desirable or erotic?

The job of sexologists specializing in this discipline is not only to reclaim their body, but also their sensations of pleasure and desire. But their role is not limited to this since they also intervene to help overcome certain functional sexual problems such as problems with erection, ejaculation, vaginal dryness or even pain.

If you or one of your relatives is concerned, do not hesitate to consult specialized sites such as the National Union of Sexologist Doctors where you will find a directory of specialists.
