The Cuban Railway Union reports through Facebook that on April 13, at 2:30 p.m., Train Extra 900, which was transporting crude oil bound for the Sergio Soto Refinery, derailed at kilometer 364.2 of the Central Line in the province of Sancti Spíritus.

Two of the tankers loaded with crude oil reportedly derailed and overturned, causing no harm to people’s lives.

However, the railway track and fuel tanks were affected by the incident.

An emergency protocol was immediately activated and an investigative commission was created to determine the causes and circumstances that caused the derailment.

According to information released by the state press, the railway authorities, together with representatives of the Party, the provincial government and security agencies, went to the site to supervise the restoration work.

As a result, passenger trains traveling on that route were temporarily diverted, increasing travel time by approximately 40 minutes.

The Railway management apologized to the passengers for the inconvenience caused and assures that it is working to restore normal circulation in the shortest possible time.

Accidentally trains the Holy Spirit

In recent years, there have been other train accidents in Sancti Spíritus, some of which have also had tragic consequences.

For example, on October 18, 2013, a train accident occurred in the vicinity of Zaza del Medio, considered “major.” According to the Escambray report, this accident caused the interruption of railway communication between the West and the East of Cuba.

The affected train suffered the derailment of 15 of the 30 cars traveling from Havana to Camagüey. Eleven of these cars overturned on the bridge known as Zaza Norte, carrying with them 426 tons of cement, two boxes containing 48 pallets of soft drinks in knobs and a plate containing tobacco.
