What is HDCP? How it works? Which devices are compatible?

HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a protection technology created to prevent piracy of digital content such as movies and series. According to Sony, is “a copy protection system to eliminate the possibility of capturing digital content from source to display”. In practice, it is a mechanism that prevents anyone from recording copyrighted content.

How does HDCP work?

HDCP is a data encryption technology found in HDMI and DVI connections, present in both transmitting devices (such as cable TV decoders, streaming services, consoles and Blu-ray players) and receivers (such as smart TVs). The transmitting device is responsible for reproducing the content, while the receiver displays the image.

Each device has its own cryptographic key and unique codes. When connecting the devices, a third code is generated with a new cryptographic key. In this way, the extraction of the transmitted content becomes extremely difficult, protecting the integrity and security of the exchanged information.

Compatibilities

HDCP technology, originally created by Intel, works only when the processor of the devices used (player and receiver) is compatible with the standard. Considering the various versions of HDCP available, it is important to check whether the devices in question have chips compatible with the same revision of the technology. For example, to play content in 4K resolution protected by HDCP, version 2.2 or higher is required.

To check compatibility between devices such as game consoles (Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch), TV Box, soundbar, smart TVs and HDMI dongles (Fire TV Stick, Chromecast, Roku), make sure that they all have the same version of HDCP. Support information for specific versions of HDCP is usually available on the manufacturer’s website and/or in the product manual. Keep in mind that to stream content in 4K resolution, you must support HDCP 2.2 or later.

Attention: To transmit content in 4K it is necessary to use at least HDMI 2.0 cables. Also, not all 4K TVs support HDCP 2.2 technology. See here, what are the types of HDMI cables.

According to Philo’s support site, a US streaming TV company, if any HDCP error occurs, it is due to some physical connection or communication problem between the player device and the receiver. This error can usually be resolved by simply reconnecting the HDMI cable. To do so, follow the steps below.

Step 01: Disconnect the HDMI cable from both sides.

Step 02: Unplug the TV and transmitting device.

Step 03: Reconnect the HDMI cable.

Step 04: Plug in the TV and transmitter device.
