With a new post on social media, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis points out that “the government’s priority is to support the demographic” hence the government staff’s eyes are on maternity allowancefor which -now- many “fixes” have been received.
In particular, the prime minister points out in the video posted on TikTok: “In less than 1 minute before the pleasant to tell you an absurdity: If a woman became a mother and was a public employee, she received maternity allowance for 9 months, if she was a private employee for 6 months and were self-employed for three and a half months.
Why this was happening is not the time to explain. But we decided to change it, because supporting the demographic is our first priority. Two days ago the relevant platform was opened and all nannies, regardless of where they work, receive state support for nine months.
Add to this the birth allowance, which has increased from 2,000 to 2,400 euros up to 3,500 euros and is even retroactive. This practically means that young families get 1,000 euros per month for nine months.
Somehow Greece is now ranked second among all OECD countries in terms of maternity support and this is certainly a distinction that makes us very proud.”

Maternity allowance equal to the minimum wage
The maternity allowance is paid for a period of 9 months and is equal to the minimum wage which is currently 830 euros.
It is recalled that on April 18, the platform was opened for the special provision of maternity protection to freelancers, self-employed women and farmers. From now on, mothers will receive 830 euros per month until the completion of 9 months, from the birth of the infant, while this extension concerns approximately 5,000-5,500 mothers. The total aid that a mother can receive is up to 10,970 euros. In addition, on April 30 thousands of mothers will also receive the increased birth allowance.
What applies to women farmers and freelancers
Farmers and self-employed mothers will no longer receive a one-off benefit, as was the case until now, as with the new government regulation, the amount that a new mother can receive reaches 11,000 euros.
Specifically, self-employed mothers – farmers and freelancers – now receive a fixed maternity allowance of 830 euros per month plus retroactive for nine months. That is, for the 9th month the mothers will receive a total of 7,470 euros. In fact, if we include the birth allowance, which for the first child is 2,400 euros and reaches 3,500 euros for the fourth child, an unemployed mother will receive a total of 10,970 euros for 9 months.
The application for granting the special maternity protection benefit is submitted here.
It is noted that the mother must have received the e-EFKA maternity allowance (breastfeeding and childbirth) and within two months from the day following its payment, submit the application for the special maternity allowance.
