CHRONIC. In France, in 2022, the excess deaths are higher than those of 2021 and 2020. If we do not yet know precisely why, the reasons put forward are alarming.

Mbad news: in France, mortality increased significantly last year. According to INSEE, “in 2022, the deaths observed clearly exceeded those expected in the absence of a Covid-19 epidemic or other unusual events such as episodes of influenza or high temperatures, etc. “. This is 53,800 deaths (8.7%). However, still according to INSEE, “the Covid-19 epidemic was less deadly in 2022… Deaths due to causes other than Covid-19 therefore increased in 2022”.

The excess deaths for 2022 are – and this was unexpected for me – higher than those for 2021 (42,700) and 2020 (48,400), years in which the excess mortality was mainly explained by the epidemic. Remember that these “excess deaths” are calculated by comparing the mortality quotients…
