Contrary to popular belief, hybrid models do not only concern small vehicles. SUVs also exist in plug-in hybrid versions. If this type of car is often criticized for its significant CO emissions2its more ecological version is attracting more and more motorists.

With its easily recognizable design, the SUV is often nicknamed the city 4X4. Particularly spacious, offering better comfort and a greater feeling of security, it is generally used in the family setting by mixing the concepts of 4X4 and minivan. Although it has the appearance of an off-roader, it can be driven around town like a classic sedan.

The characteristics of the plug-in hybrid SUV

Also known as PHEV (Plug-in hybrid Electric Vehicle), the plug-in hybrid SUV is a type of hybrid vehicle. Unlike a 100% electric car, the SUV hybrid has two types of engine:

  • a thermal engine (gasoline, generally);
  • an electric motor.

The vehicle is also equipped with a traction battery. On the practical side, it starts only with its electric motor. The heat engine connected to the drive wheels is responsible for ensuring locomotion at cruising speed while the electric motor contributes to locomotion at low speeds.

The alternation between these two energy sources is carried out automatically according to several elements:

  • the acceleration required by the driver;
  • the appearance of the land;
  • the battery charge level.

It can also be chosen manually by the motorist.

Like all plug-in hybrid cars, this type of SUV can be connected to an electrical terminal.

The battery is recharged while the vehicle is stationary, with the engine off. Charging can be done via a charging station installed directly at the driver’s home, for greater convenience. There are also more and more terminals installed in the public domain: shopping center parking lots, motorway rest areas, hotel parking lots, etc.

Mobile applications, and some GPS, even allow the driver to be shown where the nearest charging stations are located.

The advantages of a plug-in hybrid SUV

The plug-in hybrid SUV has significant advantages for motorists who are increasingly favoring it.

  • Practical: plug-in hybrids allow daily electric driving. Thanks to their increasingly efficient batteries, it is even possible to take sections of the highway without the combustion engine starting. And with motorway areas increasingly equipped with electric terminals, it is now possible to recharge your car during lunch breaks, for example. You are also protected from a breakdown since the vehicle’s two engines use different energies. The batteries of hybrid cars recharge faster than those of 100% electric vehicles.
  • Economical: SUVs consume more than conventional vehicles. But by barely requiring the thermal engine thanks to the electric motor, it is naturally preserved with less use. This type of vehicle also allows you to save fuel on a daily basis.
  • Quiet: although imposing, they do not make any noise, even when starting up.
  • Odorless: absence of hydrocarbon combustion when electric mode is used.
  • Ecological: when the combustion engine is not in use, hybrid SUVs do not emit CO2 no particles in the atmosphere, they are therefore more respectful of the environment.

The battery of a plug-in hybrid SUV is larger than that of a hybrid car not rechargeable. This advantage allows the driver to travel longer distances using only the electric motor. This is an important criterion to take into account if you are still hesitating between the two.
