Whether it is for a young graduate fresh out of school or even for a worker with several years of experience, the question of salary always arises. As a result, anyone evolving in the world of work wonders regarding their salary, wondering if the remuneration is appropriate, especially in comparison with other sectors and other employees. But information is sometimes hard to find.

Is 2000 euros a good salary?

Before addressing the issue of salary and determining whether it is good or not, it is important to clarify whether we are talking regarding gross salary or net salary.

What is a gross salary?

The gross salary represents the total salary listed on your employment contract, before any deductions. This salary usually includes:

  • the basic salary, it can be monthly or hourly and is set arbitrarily by the employer;
  • premiums for overtime;
  • commissions and bonuses;
  • other benefits if any.

What is a net salary?

This is the real amount that is paid to the worker each month, following the deduction of the various taxes, social security contributions, etc. from the gross salary. The amount deducted varies enormously according to the field and the sector of work, but also varies from one company to another. Thus, in order to be on an equal footing, it would be wiser to compare gross salaries.

2000€ as salary, is it really enough?

To determine whether a monthly salary of €2,000 gross is a good salary, you have to consult the statistics. 2000 euros can sometimes be sufficient for a full-time employee, at the start of his career, living alone, but is not for a large family, with one income, for example.

In 2017, the site Vacature.com (now Jobat) published a study on wage distribution in Belgium. According to this study, 90% of Belgians earn an average salary of more than 2050 euros. The median being at 3000 euros, we can say that 2000 euros is a fairly low salary, given that most employees earn more – it is nevertheless necessary to take into account the hours worked, the seniority in the company and the work experience, etc.

Is 5000€ a good salary?

Again, we look at the gross monthly salary in order to compare. According to the same study, only 10% of employees have a gross monthly salary of more than 5,000 euros. This is a fairly slim portion of the population, and at this point someone earning $5,000 or more per month is considered wealthy.

What are the most advantageous extra-legal benefits?

In addition to the amount of remuneration, here is a list of 8 extra-legal benefits that most interest SME managers in Belgium:
