The supposed or real establishment of the group of mercenaries in neighboring Mali worries Burkina Faso more than ever. And the Burkinabé daily The country fears a mechanical increase in terrorism in the country. Above all, the editorial asks the angry question: what if Ouagadougou also called on the Russian security company?
For some time now, like many other observers, I have been witnessing a controversy over the supposed or real presence of Russian mercenaries in Mali. Admittedly, the Bamako authorities do not confirm this. But everything suggests that this is a reality.
Especially since mid-week in progress, it was reported a case of clash between terrorists and the Malian armed forces supported by the said mercenaries of the Wagner group. I personally do not wish to comment on the advisability or otherwise of the presence of Russian mercenaries in Mali. No, that is not my objective because Mali is a sovereign country, which has the choice to cooperate with whomever it wants in the interest of its people.
What interests me personally are the consequences that the presence of Wagner’s mercenaries might have on our country, Burkina Faso, which, for nearly six years, has been facing an unprecedented security crisis. I say this because I saw the case in Syria where Wagner’s fighters hit the ground running to the point that the terrorists had to look elsewhere. It is the same in Libya where, hunted down into their toilets, terrorists have swept south of the Sahara.
What if the Russian mercenaries, who are said to be formidable, shake the coconut palm in Mali? It will be necessary to fear that terrorists will descend en masse to Burkina, which shares a very long border with Mali. I am not saying this to sow psychosis among our brave populations who are already suffering martyrdom, to the point that they no longer know which armed group to turn to.
Diversify partners
I say this quite simply to draw the attention of the highest authorities to the need to take appropriate measures so that our country does not allow itself to be surprised. This is all the more necessary as most of our borders are permissive or porous. This is what makes the fight once morest terrorism more complex insofar as the combatants of the armed groups who disturb our sleep manage to cross borders easily.
They have understood that they can strike on one side and fall back without being worried on the other. Do you see? We must open our eyes and the right one if we do not want to worsen our lot. Even if we have to recall our contingents on a peacekeeping mission to save our endangered homeland, I think it should be done. Thus, we will be able to strengthen control at our borders, so as to limit the movements of the various armed groups.
At the same time, I hope that the means of surveillance of our territory will be strengthened. Certainly, I know that this requires a lot of financial resources, but given that our country is threatened in its existence, no sacrifice, in my opinion, is too much. The fight once morest insecurity has become a priority for us. We must therefore make efforts, not to say sacrifices.
This is why I would like Burkina Faso to also work to diversify its partners in the fight once morest terrorism. I was also happy when, at the end of the past year, I learned that Burkina Faso had signed agreements with Turkey, which, whatever people may say, is a military power. Why not do the same with Russia if Wagner succeeds in Mali?
