The next GTA game on Netflix? The idea isn’t that crazy and was chronicled in a Wall Street Journal article this week.

What if the next episode of Grand Theft Auto was intended for the Netflix platform? The idea may seem crazy to you, but it is in fact quite concrete, and does not necessarily concern the 6th part that everyone is dying to discover. Currently, you are aware that the SVOD platform has been redoubling its efforts to develop its game offering for two years, which are moreover focused on mobile. However, the giant would also intend to offer more high-end productions and reportedly even discussed acquiring a license for a Grand Theft Auto game. This idea was exposed in a new report from the very serious Wall Street Journal. The company would therefore consider offering a GTA game, the title or level of completion of which was not specified by the media. We naturally imagine a spin-off, dedicated to mobile, or even other distribution platforms. Because yes, the WSJ also reminds us that the company “is taking steps to expand into high-end games that can be streamed from TVs or computers“. An initiative currently limited to Canada and the United Kingdom. As part of this experimental phase already developed publicly this summer, Netflix presents two games to users: “Oxenfree” and “Molehew’s Mining Adventure”.

Currently, Netflix includes more than 50 game titles for free in the subscription, only accessible on smartphones and tablets. In addition to a slew of mobile adaptations of its programs, the catalog also offers other popular games, already released on other platforms, such as Oxenfree, Immortality, Kentucky Route Zero or Spiritfarer. Recently, the company also welcomed anticipated sequels like Oxenfree II: Lost Signals and Unknown Soldiers: Brothers in Arms and is undertaking a major collaboration with Ubisoft.

A business that is struggling to take off

The WSJ suggests that Netflix is hoping to assert its presence in the video game space in order to attract new subscribers and justify the increase in subscription prices. He cites figures from app tracker Apptopia, which indicate that downloads of Netflix games increased from 30.4 million to 70.5 million over the past year. Figures which still need to be put into perspective, with IGN recalling that Honkai: Star Rail alone was downloaded more than 20 million times just on the day of its launch at the start of the year. In reality, less than 1% of Netflix’s 238 million subscribers play these games daily. An analyst interviewed by the outlet says that Netflix has spent around $1 billion on games so far and it’s unclear whether that investment will ever pay off.
