What if coffee could protect against endometrial cancer?

THE ESSENTIAL

  • When symptoms, such as vaginal bleeding following menopause or outside periods before menopause, occur, endometrial cancer may be suspected.
  • Drinking coffee might reduce the risk of suffering from endometrial cancer.

It is the 4th most common cancer among French women. Endometrial cancer is a gynecological tumor that most often affects women following menopause. At the time of diagnosis, the average age of patients is 68 years. “Endometrial cancer is associated with several risk factors including obesity, diabetes, treatment with tamoxifen or, more rarely, a genetic predisposition”, can we read on National Cancer Institute website.

In a recent study published in the journal The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Research, Chinese researchers have revealed that drinking coffee may reduce the risk of endometrial cancer. To reach this conclusion, the scientists analyzed 24 studies on coffee consumption in 699,234 healthy women and 9,833 endometrial cancer patients.

A reduction in the risk of endometrial cancer thanks to coffee

According to the results, patients who drank coffee had their risk of developing endometrial cancer reduced by 29% compared to participants who consumed decaffeinated. The authors found that women with a high BMI were 35% less likely to suffer from this tumor thanks to coffee consumption. The endometrial cancer risk of volunteers who never smoked was reduced by 32%.

“Caffeine consumption has been shown to directly affect levels of sex hormone-binding globulin. It modulates testosterone and estrogen. These hormonal changes may favorably inhibit the risk of endometrial cancer. In addition, consumption of coffee is significantly associated with improved insulin sensitivity and better glycemic control in patients with diabetes, a factor that has been linked to a higher risk of endometrial cancer.” explained the scientists.
