Many users wonder regarding the most suitable methods to save energy at home, especially manipulate electronic devices. Many times, disconnecting some appliances that we are not using helps to reduce electricity consumption and, in this way, to reduce general household expenses.
Therefore, the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin) provides some recommendations to improve our daily practices and our energy consumption habits in homes.

Does a TV consume energy if it is left off but plugged in?
The television is one of the most common devices in the houses and, mostly, when turning it off, it is usually left connected to the current. This practice, according to Osinergmin in dialogue with La República, it supposes a minimum expenditure of energy.
“Electronic equipment that consumes electricity in ‘standby mode’ is that which is turned on and off with a remote control: such as televisions, stereos, game consoles, air conditioning, heating, (… .) which represents a consumption between 0.15 kW to 0.4 kW per month and an approximate cost of S/ 0.01 to S/ 0.03″, pointed out the public institution.

In this way, for users it implies a minimum balance to leave the television plugged in, compared to other devices. “Modern televisions have a very low power standby, between 0.2 W to 0.5 W for each device”, said the entity.
What electronic items are recommended to disconnect?
Similarly, the Osinergmin It is recommended to pay attention to those devices with high power: such as electric showers (4,000 W to 7,500 W), hot tubs (1,500 W to 2,500 W), kettles (800 W to 1,200 W), electric cookers (3,000 W to 8,000 W), clothes dryer (2,200 W), among others.
The longer they are in operation, these electrical objects consume more energy, which would raise the monthly cost of electricity.
The Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining It also advises programming the hot tub on and off with a time switch, which should be between 20 and 30 minutes before using it, and taking showers of a maximum of 10 minutes.
Similarly, it is recommended to take advantage of natural light to dry clothes and iron them only once. Likewise, the entity suggests that users replace all incandescent, fluorescent and saving light bulbs with LED type bulbs, since these save 90% (with respect to incandescents) and 50% (with respect to fluorescents and savers).

Finally, It is recommended to disconnect non-essential appliances, such as sound equipment, game consoles, among others; as well as using power strips with multiple outlets and switches that can turn several devices on or off at the same time.
For example, its use is recommended in the entertainment center, where we can connect a television, sound equipment and game consoles in a single power strip, in order to cut the electricity to these equipment with just one button.
