What happened at Brussels-Midi station on Saturday? “I have never seen such a massive police deployment” (PHOTOS)
These measures must, according to Georges Gilkinet, be taken gradually within the framework of a five-year plan. “We must tackle in depth the different types of problems, namely the question of migration, mental health, drugs, the vacancy of buildings. I am thinking, for example, of the Tri Postal building which will finally be occupied with the headquarters of the SNCB. On the other side of the station, three quarters of the buildings belonging to the Régie des Bâtiments are unoccupied. These buildings are deteriorating, are squatted and there is therefore less social control.”
Beliris needs more control
According to him, Beliris, the cooperation body between the federal government and the Brussels region, must take more control in this file. “We should all get together around the table to cooperate as well as possible, avoiding institutional quarrels and the question of the transfer of powers. SNCB has made a firm proposal aimed at setting up a police station or a police branch within station and this is a step in the right direction. The return to calm will also involve an in-depth transformation of the surroundings of the station, by planning economic, social and cultural activities in order to finally give Brussels the international station it deserves,” he concludes.
