Los kidney stones are a fairly common disease and according to the Spanish Association of Urology (AEU), one in ten people might suffer from this pathology at some point in their lives. However, there is an exercise that might help prevent its formation.

A kidney stone or stone is a solid piece of material that forms in the kidney due to substances present in the urine. They can be large or small and are passed from the body without medical help, although they can sometimes get stuck in the urinary tract, block the flow of urine, and cause great pain.

Kidney stones occur when the amount of crystal-forming substances in the urine, such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, is greater than what the fluids in the urine can dilute. At the same time, it may lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking to each other, creating an ideal environment for crystal formation.

Exercise to prevent the formation of kidney stones

Aerobic exercises like walk, jog or bikemay help prevent the formation of kidney stones, according to a study recently published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

These change the way the body handles nutrients and fluids that affect stone formation. People who exercise sweat salt and tend to retain calcium in the bones, instead of allowing it to go to the kidneys, where stones are formed. They should also drink water or fluids followingward, the report says.

“Even small amounts of exercise can decrease the risk of kidney stones,” said study author Dr. Mathew Sorensen, of the Washington University School of Medicine. “It doesn’t have to be marathons, it can be 3 times a week and the intensity of the exercise doesn’t seem to matter,” he concluded.
