According to the “space” website, the spacecraft is still on its way to send data, and with it its twin Voyager 2, which it joined in interstellar space in 2018, is also continuing to conduct pioneering science.

Launched in 1977, the spacecraft was primarily designed to explore Jupiter and Saturn, while Voyager 1 gave priority to Saturn’s giant moon Titan.

Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to explore interstellar space, when it was 122 astronomical units (AU) away from the Sun.

Scientists know that the Voyager sensors have crossed from the heliosphere, where the solar wind dominates, into interstellar space due to the particle density.

The probes’ transit into interstellar space may have been obvious, but the heliosphere – the “twilight zone” between the bubble-like heliosphere and interstellar space – had unexpected properties.

Each spacecraft took two months to transit, during which time they sent data on peaks and dips in plasma density, and Voyager 1 and 2 data regarding magnetic fields in the heliosphere confused scientists.

Voyager 1 is now 40 AU outside the heliosphere, allowing scientists to discover what the interstellar medium really is, and it turns out to be more influenced by the heliosphere than previously thought.

The data shows that galactic cosmic rays behave differently depending on whether they are parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field. to the sun.
