Bad breath is very common and can be caused by eating pungent foods and gum disease in some cases. The type of odor can also be a sign of an underlying cause, which may require medical treatment.
Burping is usually harmless, experts said, and occurs when the body is removing excess gas from the upper digestive tract.
The gas usually enters the body through the mouth or from food that is broken down by gut bacteria. But when you have a burp that smells like rotten eggs, which is hydrogen sulfide, it might be a sign of serious digestive problems.
Experts at Metropolitan Gastroenterology Associates explained: “Hydrogen sulfide is a byproduct of digestion. While sometimes hydrogen sulfide production is normal, excessive production is often indicative of a digestive problem. Sulfur burps can be caused by many from conditions including stress, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and bacterial infections such as Helicobacter pylori.”
According to experts, sulfur burps can also be caused by frequent acid reflux, known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), according to Russia Today.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when stomach acid flows regularly into the throat from the lower parts of the digestive tract.
Regular acid can cause the lining of the esophagus to become inflamed and increase the risk of esophageal cancer.
But sulfur burps may also occur due to the presence of certain foods and drinks in your diet.
Experts from Metropolitan Gastroenterology Associates revealed: “Some foods can also cause sulfur burps, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, garlic, dairy products, and milk.”
The health authority explained that the best treatment for breathing that smells of rotten eggs is to treat the underlying cause.
The main tip is to keep a food diary and note the foods you eat that affect you the most. “You can try eliminating these foods from your diet temporarily,” said Metropolitan Gastroenterology Associates.
And if you experience sulfur burps, you should see your doctor, especially if they are combined with other symptoms.
Difficulty swallowing and persistent vomiting or bloody vomiting are other signs of GERD that you may notice.
Some reports that green tea can aid digestion, and has been shown to reduce sulfur burps.
Staying hydrated can protect the stomach from bacteria. It also helps you break down sulfur foods better.
Oral health brand Colgate also recommended: “Chewing more slowly and avoiding gum and hard sweets will reduce the air you swallow. Reducing your intake of sulfur-containing vegetables may also help with smelly burps, but the effect varies from person to person.”
