Anderlecht condemned the events caused by its supporters at Sociedad immediately after the match. The club also knows that a new sanction awaits it and that a past decision still haunts it.
Almost exactly two years ago, Anderlecht fans caused trouble during their trip to West Ham. At the time, pyrotechnics were used, objects were thrown and damage was caused to the London Stadium.
UEFA then fined RSCA 50,000 euros and the club was unable to sell tickets for the following match against Silkeborg. A second meeting was also conditional.
As the two-year deadline has not quite passed (the previous incidents date from October 20, 2022), it is very likely that Anderlecht will not be able to take their fans to Riga. This meeting is scheduled for November 7.
Anderlecht must wait for UEFA verdict
New sanctions will likely be imposed, including a fine. UEFA does not take fan violence lightly in recent times and wants to put an end to it.
Anderlecht must therefore fear an additional sanction, which the Mauves could not afford. “We will have to wait for the UEFA report to see exactly what happened,” press officer Mathias Declercq said immediately after the match. “We want to unequivocally condemn these actions as a club and we want to apologize to the club and to the supporters of Real Sociedad. This completely unacceptable behavior has no place in football.”
“We also have a conditional sanction following the incidents at West Ham two seasons ago,” Declercq explained. “It could be that UEFA activates it and we therefore have to play an away match without fans. So that makes the fact that such events could happen even more incomprehensible.”
