The government wants to abolish tax classes III and V and thus end the preferential treatment for the higher-earning partner. We calculated how much it would cost.
DThe traffic light coalition is becoming an advocate for women. She wants to abolish a tax disadvantage that generally affects women. This is regarding the tax brackets that married couples choose. They favor the higher earner, and that is still usually the man. He benefits from the tax advantage that so-called spouse splitting offers. He gets a particularly high net amount from his gross, while his partner groans under the burden of an above-average wage tax and finds the whole system unfair.
This is because three quarters of married couples choose tax class combination III and V following marriage. This means that the higher earner can be entered in Class III, the other – often the woman – in Class V. Very little tax is due in Class III because all allowances are deducted by both partners (for example twice the basic allowance of 11,604 euros). ). The tax discount through spousal splitting is also taken into account there.
