What do AI researchers think about the future of AI?

A survey of 2,778 artificial intelligence researchers reveals their expectations for the future of AI. These range from self-created websites to composing music.

Why is this important?

These predictions not only highlight the potential speed of AI development, but also highlight the enormous impact that AI can have on the labor market and creative industries.

In the news : THE researchersworking in leading AI fields, predict that AI will reach several milestones by 2028.

  • This includes independent development of a payment processing website. Or the production of music equivalent to the music of popular artists.
  • Standalone downloading and development of a large language model is also planned.
  • By 2047, there is a 50% chance that AI will surpass human skills in all tasks.

Zoom in : the chance that AI can automate all professions by 2037 is estimated at 10%. This probability rises to 50% by 2116. Half of the respondents were betting on 2164 during the survey conducted in 2022.

Focusing on preventing risks from the future of AI

Zoom out: The general view is that faster development of AI can have both positive and negative consequences for humanity.

  • There is strong consensus on the importance of research aimed at minimizing the risks associated with six different AI-related scenarios. This includes the spread of false information, authoritarian control of the population and growing inequality.
  • Does humanity benefit more from seeing AI progress quickly or slowly? On this point, there is total disagreement among researchers.
