What countries can you go to without a passport? 2024-02-14 19:54:09

Did you know that with Spanish citizenship you can visit several countries in the world without having to get a Spanish passport? Well yes, Spanish citizens have multiple advantages and this is one of them. What nations can you go to with just your identification document (DNI)? We tell you below.

If you want to travel to another country, the first thing you should do is check your documentation and make sure it is up to date. For Spaniards, the DNI is sufficient to travel within Spain and to some foreign countries, without the need for a passport.

According to local reports, the countries you can go to with just your DNI are those that are part of the European Union, which are 27 in total. According to the Ministry of the Interior, these are the names of the countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden.

Travel only with the Spanish identity document, without a passport

In addition to these European Union countries, there are 15 other countries to which you can also travel with just your DNI. These are: Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vatican City, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, San Marino, Serbia and Switzerland.

But be careful, because some of these countries have special requirements regarding the validity of the DNI. For example, in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland they will ask that your DNI be valid for at least three months when you travel.

Another issue that must be taken into account is the specific situation of the United Kingdom. Having left the European Union, you can no longer travel to that country with just your DNI. However, there are some special cases: “people who have requested the EU Settlement Scheme will be able to continue using the DNI until December 31, 2025,” they explain from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.
