From January 1, 2024, the terms of the ecological bonus allocated to electric cars will change. In fact, the premium will be counted depending on where the vehicle was manufactured, its battery and the materials it is made of.

On September 19, 2023, the government unveiled the terms of the new ecological bonus, while waiting for the list of eligible electric cars to be published. This purchase bonus of 5,000 euros, increased to 7,000 euros for low-income households, will take into account respect for the environment. And this, both in terms of production, assembly and even logistics. These measures risk triggering an avalanche on the Chinese market.

Electric car: chow to calculate the new ecological bonus in 2024?

As part of the ecological bonus, 2024, the eligibility conditions for electric cars will no longer depend on of their price at less than €4,000 or of their weight less than 2.4 tonnes. The decree complementary to that of September 19 details how the new bonus is calculated. It also reveals the methods for assessing the impact of polluting emissions from cars on the environment.

This big cleaning will go through a ecological score, established by the Agency for Ecological Transition (Ademe). To benefit from the ecological bonus in 2024, electric cars must have a score of around 60/100 or 70/100.

This score includes 4 main criteria. In particular the manufacturing materials, the energy consumed during its assembly, the integrated battery and its mode of transport. Furthermore, data relating to the so-called circular economy, such as the possibility of repairing batteries and the use of bio-sourced and recycled materials, will be taken into account.

Important clarification, the introduction of this environmental note will take place on December 15, 2023? While the change will take effect on January 1, 2024.

What regarding French cars built in China?

Through these new ecological bonus measures, the government also intends to encourage the production of electric cars in Europe. In fact, a vehicle built in China risks presenting a lower grade, taking into account transport costs. Without forgetting the fact that the Chinese market, leader in the electric car sector, depends heavily on coal. Thus, its environmental score indirectly benefits European manufacturers, particularly French ones.

Among the questions that remain, there is the fate of the Renault Dacia Spring, one of the most sold models in France. Made in China, like the Tesla Y and 3, are these electric cars eligible for the ecological bonus? According to the ministry, certain models might benefit from it, in particular the smallest. We will have to wait until December 15, 2023 to know the answer.

Aid for low-income households?

In addition to the list of electric cars eligible for this ecological bonus, its amount will also be specified. In fact, the premium for the lowest-income households would increase from €7,000 to €8,000. However, official sources have not yet given any indication on this matter.
