What changes in 2023: the systematic printing of the receipt prohibited in stores from April

the essential
From April 1, 2023, the systematic printing of tickets will be prohibited at store checkouts.

Every year, 33 billion receipts are issued in French stores. This will no longer be the case next year. Indeed, the systematic printing of the receipt will be prohibited from April 1, 2023. This is the consequence of the decree implementing the anti-waste law.

“In application of law nº2020-105 of February 10, 2020 relating to the fight once morest waste and the circular economy, receipts will no longer be automatically printed by the merchant (…). This change is motivated by the fight once morest dangerous substances present in receipts and to remedy the significant waste that these receipts represent (30 billion receipts printed each year)” can be read on the site service-public.fr

Initially thought to come into force on January 1, 2023, this measure was finally postponed to April several weeks ago. This postponement was made due to inflation, the Ministry of the Economy considering that in these times of rising prices, consumers are attached to the possibility of checking their purchases.

Concretely, from April 1, 2023, the merchant will therefore no longer automatically print the receipt. The customer must expressly state that he wants to print his ticket. If the customer so wishes, the merchant cannot refuse it.

If you do not want to print your ticket, the merchant will offer – and many already do – to send it to you by email, SMS, QR code or even directly via a notification via the your bank. Last March, 53% of French people said they were in favor of this measure according to a study by the Opinéa institute for Twilio.
