“What can a Venezuelan teach about the history of Peru?” Protest of teachers

This Monday following the start of the 2023 School Year, a group of hired teachers protested in front of the Arequipa Regional Education Management. They question that some schools hire foreign teachers before them, despite the level of unemployment in our region.

The representative of the Association of Contracted and Unemployed TeachersJuan Carlos Jaquehua, in defense of the union members, clarified that their requests are not xenophobic. They only express their perception so that the authorities realize that they are not prioritizing the peruvian professional.

They also denounced that the contracted teachers charge 1000 soles. But foreign teachers come to accept these places in exchange for 600 soles, achieving a disadvantaged competition, indicates Jaquehua.

“We are 15,000 unemployed teachers in Arequipa and 300,000 nationwide, 4 foreign citizens have already been given places 15 days ago, and in the north ugel there are other cases, the figures will rise if the authorities allow it.

In turn, the teachers ask that the work management check private schools since they indicated that the migration law dictates that for every 10 professionals, 1 can be a foreigner. But they denounce that in some private schools they exceeded 50% of hiring by teaching staff, according to reports and complaints in the North and South UGEL.

“Foreigners do not know the curriculum of our country, management is playing with educational quality,¿What can a Venezuelan teach a student regarding the history of Peru??
