This week there was a bang: The Federal Network Agency has both StreamOn from Deutsche Telekom and the Vodafone passes forbidden. Marketing for new customers must now end on July 1, 2022. Existing customers can use it until the end of March 2023. The providers have already made the decision with regret noted. But now my question to you is: What do you think regarding the ban on so-called zero-rating offers?
I deliberately leave my opinion out until the survey is evaluated. But of course there are two sides to this: On the one hand, you can take the view that customers are now losing an advantage. That’s how it was regarding StreamOn and the Vodafone Passes possible, e.g. B. not to have the music streaming via Apple Music or Spotify counted towards the data volume. I’m sure many readers would have liked to take advantage of that.
On the other hand, one can also agree with the reasoning of the Federal Network Agency. The latter assumes that the zero-rating offers violated net neutrality, since all data traffic was no longer treated equally. This can potentially benefit incumbents but make it difficult for newcomers to break into the market. In addition, the Federal Network Agency had presented StreamOn and the Vodafone passports more or less directly as a deliberate delusion of customers.
The Federal Network Agency sees the two options more as alibis intended to hide the fact that the telecommunications providers did not want to make any effort to establish real flat rates at affordable prices. It is expected that the discontinuation of StreamOn and Vodafone passes will mean that Telekom and Vodafone will make their tariffs more attractive to customers through lower prices or higher data volumes.
