These days, few people can go without the Internet for more than a few hours. Indeed, almost every use requires a 4G connection: browsing social networks, checking emails, watching a series or listening to music… And this, wherever we are. So, it can quickly become frustrating if the connection is not optimal. This can, unfortunately, be the case in public transport such as the metro or even when traveling by train. In order to make your journeys much more pleasant, we reveal our tips for obtaining a good Internet connection in these places. Focus.

The best packages of the moment:

When a passenger finds himself on the train, the journey can be particularly long. Especially when he doesn’t have internet access. In recent years, this has become a real need for the vast majority of travelers. This allows them to be active at all times: answering emails, following the latest news, watching a film via a video-on-demand service or even navigating between their various social networks. This need has been widely heard and understood by professionals. Thus, today, it is much easier to have access to 4G or, more recently, 5G in trains: coverage amounts to more than 70% for TGV lines. How to take advantage of it?

SNCF has set up its own Wi-Fi network and offers its passengers a completely free Internet connection. To do this, simply connect directly to the Wifi network of your train. And in some cases, create an account to identify yourself. Via TGV Connect, SNCF is able to provide a stable connection over time, even in tunnels. Indeed, the latter has invested in the installation of nearly 124 km of optical fiber and has installed 18,000 antennas on its network. Regarding its operation, the SNCF explains it better than us:

“In our trains, boxes capture the 4G signal then transform it into a wifi network before broadcasting it, allowing you to benefit from a stable Internet connection, whatever your mobile operator. To ensure a continuous connection, additional terminals have also been installed every 3 km on all the main high-speed axes. »

Also, in some trains such as the Ouigo, it is possible to pay a supplement when buying your ticket to benefit from a quality internet connection. This network is dedicated exclusively to those paying a surplus, in order to provide them with a much more efficient connection than the free network available to all.

TRICK

Many apps offer “Offline” mode. This feature allows them to be usable, even when the connection is unstable or cut (which happens regularly in tunnels, for example). Thinking regarding activating it allows a higher quality of use.

It’s not just long train journeys that are affected by this subject: the metro is too. Whether coming home from work or to meet friends, thousands of people use this means of transport every day and want to get a quality connection. Which, at first glance, is more complicated because the metro is mostly underground. This has a direct impact on the quality of reception. Here too, the needs of consumers have been heard and taken into account.

Thus, many free public Wifi networks have been set up and deployed on the various stations. This is taken care of by an association of three actors: the community, the transport company concerned and one, or in certain cases, several mobile operators. For example, the RATP has announced full 4G coverage of Paris metro stations. The latter even claims to be “the first historic transport network to offer access to 4G across its entire network”. He’s not the only one to be commended. Arcep (the Telecoms Regulatory Authority) monitors network coverage annually and does not hesitate to share its results. Thus, cities like Lyon, Toulouse, Rennes or Lille also have very good coverage in the metro.

These technological advances allow passengers to take full advantage of their mobile phone during their journey, whatever the duration and wherever they are. Tunnels will no longer be an obstacle to watch their favorite series in streaming.

TO KNOW

These free networks are good news for many users. They turn out to be a great alternative. Only, we must not forget two things: the first is that their deployment is still recent and they are not yet available on all imaginable lines. The second is free. As this is a free service available to everyone, it is possible that many people are connected simultaneously. This can sometimes create reception latencies.

4G keys: a welcome alternative

Another solution is available to users, especially those who do not wish to use their entire data envelope: 4G keys. Increasingly renowned and appreciated by consumers, these allow you to enjoy the Internet, wherever you are. Equipped with a SIM card, they work on the same networks as mobile devices. They look like small USB keys and allow you to benefit from an Internet connection on your smartphone, laptop or tablet. What to stay connected in all circumstances.

At present, all incumbent operators (Orange, Bouygues Telecom or SFR) offer their own 4G keys. All you have to do is choose yours!
