Appendicitis means inflammation of the appendix, a small organ located at the end of the large intestine. This inflammation causes pain that manifests in the lower right side (iliac fossa) of the abdomen. What distinguishes it from other pain is that it comes on suddenly and unexpectedly. The cause of this pathology is the engorgement of this organ which measures only a few centimeters. Different substances can lodge there and cause pain. Appendicitis requires an emergency consultation to avoid complications. Acute appendicitis can lead to peritonitis, inflammation of the tissues that cover the viscera, potentially serious. Early diagnosis can prevent it. A simple surgical intervention can, in fact, definitively solve the problem.

Appendicitis: diagnosis and management
The pain felt in case of appendicitis can be common to other pathologies, in particular gastroenteritis, ovarian pathology, intestinal disease, etc. The general practitioner can therefore request other exploratory examinations such as an MRI to confirm his diagnosis. If it is appendicitis, the only treatment is the removal of the appendix by surgery. This operation, practiced for decades, presents few risks. It requires hospitalization for a few days and post-operative follow-up, in particular to avoid possible complications.
