What are the effects of the full moon on health?

Does the full moon actually have an impact on our health or is it just unfounded beliefs. We take stock.

What is the full moon?

We are talking regarding full moon to designate the phase during which the moon is fully uncovered; a phenomenon observed from Earth on the day when the Moon rises at the same time as the Sun sets and vice versa. The lunar cycle lasts 29 days and we can therefore observe the full moon every 29 days. If the full moon lasts only one day, the corresponding lunar phase can be enlarged, with the effects of the full moon most often felt from a few days before D-Day to a few days following.

What are the effects of the full moon on sleep?

Trouble sleeping when the moon is full? You are not the only one ! A study published in the journal Science Advances demonstrates that during the days preceding or following the full moon, sleep starts later and is shorter. On average, we would thus sleep 20 minutes less the 4 days before and following the full moon … and the deep sleep phase is reduced by 30% (according to a study by researcher Christian Cajochen published in the journal Current Biology)! The arguments put forward by the scientists? It seems that “the moonlight probably stimulated nocturnal activity and inhibited sleep” explain the authors. More specifically, this concerns nights when the moonlight is visible during the hours following dusk, when we are used to going to bed (and not when the moon is uncovered in the middle of the night, when we sleep already deeply). Result ? Shorter nights that impact our health. Less restful, of course, but which also affect many biological processes that our body carries out during our sleep phase (memory, cell regeneration, waste disposal, impact on melatonin levels, etc.).

Can we be stressed because of the moon?

Yes. Already because we sleep less well full moon nights … and lack of sleep promotes stress. But not only. As early as 1992, astrophysicists from the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) noticed that during the full moon – when lunar electromagnetic radiation is at its maximum – the energy of the elementary particles of matter was modified. The moon’s rays would then have an impact on our nervous system and disrupt the functioning of certain hormonal glands – such as the pituitary or the thyroid – directly linked to the development of anxiety disorders…

Libido, hair and nail growth… What is the impact of the Moon?

Regarding the ability of the Full Moon to grow nails and hair faster, to promote childbirth, to synchronize the menstrual cycle or to boost the libido … Scientific evidence is lacking. Ditto with regard to lunar sensitivity, or the fact of seeing one’s sensitivity increased tenfold as the full moon approaches. Among the symptoms that moon-sensitive people attribute to the movement of the Moon? Fatigue, irritability, restless sleep, painful periods or boosted libido… all of which would be linked to the maximum intensity of the Moon’s radiation!
