What are the best times to exercise for a diabetic patient in Ramadan?

Most diabetics who fast during Ramadan maintain appropriate exercise to maintain their health, but this group of patients must know the best times that help a diabetic patient exercise so that they do not experience health problems.

Dr. Suzanne Koubar, Consultant Diabetologist and Endocrinologist, explained in statements to Sky News Arabia that physical fitness and maintaining sports activity are important factors to maintain the health of a diabetic patient, and even during the month of Ramadan, one must continue to exercise, provided that the necessary advice and directions are known.

She added that the best time for exercise in Ramadan is following the iftar time for a period ranging between 30-45 minutes or even more, with the need to maintain body hydration and drink fluids during and following exercise.

Many benefits of exercise in Ramadan

The diabetes and endocrinology consultant indicated that exercising during Ramadan contributes to achieving many important health benefits for diabetics, especially if the necessary directives and advice are adhered to, and the most prominent benefits are:

  • Increase the efficiency of the muscular system.
  • Rid the body of grease.
  • Maintaining body weight following the various Ramadan foods.
  • Increasing the efficiency of the circulatory system, as it raises the production of red blood cells and thus increases the amount of hemoglobin that carries and transmits oxygen.
  • It increases the production of white blood balls, thus increasing the body’s ability to protect and defend.
  • Increases platelet production, which prepares the body for rapid clotting in case of bleeding.
  • It strengthens the immune system and increases the body’s ability to resist many diseases.

Important preventive measures for diabetics

Diabetic patients must take some preventive measures while exercising during the month of fasting, including:

  • Do not leave the house without used medications or a bracelet to identify the diseases that you suffer from.
  • The need to carry some dates, sugar, or juice to raise the glucose level in case the patient suffers from hypoglycemia.
  • Continuous monitoring of blood sugar levels.
  • Carry a bottle of water to avoid dehydration.
  • Avoid stopping any medication prescribed by your doctor for diabetes.
