Thanks to the technological miracle of free Wi-Fi on airplanes, which allows us to use WhatsApp during international flights without running the unnecessary risk of downing the aircraft by sending too many yellow emoticons while laughing, my girlfriend and I have adopted an entertaining practice to do more The idle hours in the air are enjoyable: watching a movie together, one on the ground and the other thousands of feet above the ground, while we discuss it via chat. An entire logistical coordination operation that, when executed well, really serves the ultimate purpose of forgetting that you are crossing the sky at cruising speed while riding in a chair.

In our most recent installment of this hobby, she chose the classic “My Fair Lady”, the more than overwhelming winner of the 1964 Oscar Awards with the immortal Audrey Hepburn in the leading role and a mammoth duration of almost three hours that does not leave Outwardly there are no details of the musical on which it is based. For those who have not seen it yet, it is a kind of old version of “Pretty Woman” in which the superb phonetics professor Henry Higgins bets with a friend that he would be able to educate Eliza Doolittle, a humble street flower seller, in manners. , to passing her off as a member of the London upper class at the embassy’s next annual ball.

It didn’t take many scenes to pass before we began to feel a certain discomfort towards various elements of the film. It was no longer just the constant abuse that Higgins subjects poor Eliza to, supposedly for her own good, while trying to teach her to speak correctly, but also loudly sung messages such as “The weaker sex was made for man to marry, to share his nest and see how his food is cooked.” o “Can’t a woman learn to use her head? Why do they do everything like their mothers? “Why can’t a woman behave like a man?”among many other statements that repeated today would be tremendously incorrect.

Of course I am not calling for the cancellation of “My Fair Lady”, since I believe that artistic productions are not only a product of the creativity of their author but also a vivid reflection of the times in which they were conceived, but It does allow us to reflect on the difficult task of instilling feminism in a generation that grew up with this type of ideas embedded in the films and role models of their time.

Sixty years ago, Higgins could well represent the aspirational masculinity of that time, where an educated man forcibly molded a substantially younger partner until she was worthy of acceptance into his social circle. A difficult stereotype to break down that earned him an Oscar. While the timeless rebellion of Audrey Hepburn, who before landing gives a great lesson in female empowerment like an aeronautical moral, would not even be enough to reach the nomination. How fortunate that things have changed.
