What a scare! 121 lightning struck Medellin during this afternoon’s hailstorm

What was experienced in the metropolitan area this Thursday followingnoon was a tremendous storm: 121 lightning strikes fell and winds of up to 45 kilometers per hour bent trees and palm trees. The temperature, which was pleasant before the downpour, dropped to 10 degrees Celsius. Those and other data provided by the Metropolitan Area.

Before the rain, the temperature was around 26 degrees and, despite the gray clouds, the sun was warm. After the storm and the winds, plus the enraged hail, it fell to 16 degrees. And it was not just perception: the Metropolitan Area declared that this was an “extreme precipitation” event, since they fell between 45 and 60 millimeters of water.

As recorded by social networks, the downpour was accompanied by a lot of hail. Where more hail fell was at the stations of the SIATA Museo de Antioquía, Wind Radar Station – in the commune 16 Belén and Montañita de San Antonio de Prado.

According to the Metropolitan Area report, between 18% and 23% of the precipitations were composed of solids, that is, by hail. As for lightning, another sample of the storm that the region experienced, 115 fell in Medellín and the remaining 6 in Bello.

As usual, several depressed areas of the city were flooded and generated road chaos. Those who suffered the most were San Juan with 80, the Musicians, the Bulerías and the Livestock Fair.

Medellin firefighters responded to calls for overflowing streams and falling trees.
