WFP: First humanitarian aid convoy arrives in Gaza from Jordan

The Rome-based organization said the convoy of 46 trucks, carrying more than 750 tonnes of goods, arrived after “several weeks of coordination with all parties”.

“This is an important first step that could help create a more sustainable aid corridor through Jordan and enable the delivery of more aid,” she said.

WFP said it is mobilizing resources from across the region.

“By bringing food from Jordan to the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing, we will increase the amount and speed of food reaching the Gaza Strip, as millions of people are at risk of starvation,” she added.

Last Friday, Israel allowed the temporary delivery of much-needed aid to the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing, opening a new supply route after weeks of pressure.

“Creating a corridor through Jordan will increase aid flows and reduce the pressure and congestion we are currently facing,” said Samer Abdel Jaber, WFP representative for the Palestinian territories.

“That way we’ll be able to secure more inventory and have more trucks on the road,” he said.

“We are very grateful to everyone who helped make this happen. This is a promising step that we hope will give us long-term and increased access to reach more people in the Gaza Strip faster,” the WFP spokesperson added.
