We’ve all done it before, yet Nintendo is asking us to stop: this technique can kill your games!

Fans of video games and especially of retro productions undoubtedly have many memories. A simple game of Super Mario RPG can be enough to plunge players back into nostalgia, or a rather innocuous act, like blowing into Nintendo game cartridges. We’ve all done it, convincing ourselves that blowing off dust with our breath would miraculously make a game that struggled to launch work. But Nintendo would like to warn users, we must stop mistreating our old game cartridges!

Nintendo sounds the alarm

We’ve all blown our game cartridges before because miraculously they then worked, or so we thought. Chance, or a huge coincidence, made us assume that this practice was acceptable. Players around the world have all tried this technique, which would not be as beneficial as we thought. In a Twitter post, Nintendo wants to make it clear: do not blow in your game cartridges because instead of “repairing” them, you damage them!

“If dust gets into the game card slot, vacuum it up. Do not blow on it or do anything else. Saliva may stick to the terminals and cause parts to rust or corrode.”

But don’t try to clean the cartridge with a cotton swab either!

The other alternative favored by players who are concerned regarding seeing dust settle in their cartridge is cleaning with a cotton swab. Nintendo warns: the object can get stuck, or even break inside the game. It is also possible that cotton residues get into the cartridge and seriously damage its condition.

While retro games are on the rise (more than ever), the condition of Nintendo cartridges is paramount. It is important to keep these genuine collector’s items in good condition, so that they can be kept for as long as possible, or resold at high prices.

“The inside of the game cartridge is equipped with a terminal for reading game cards.
If you clean this area with a cotton swab or insert a game card with a broken terminal, it may get stuck in the terminal and break.

Do not touch the inside of the game card.”

To effectively clean its cartridges, Nintendo advises to favor a suction method. If possible, it is ideal to use a small device capable of sucking up dust very gently so as not to damage the components of the game cartridge. This will guarantee your favorite games a much longer lifespan!
