Westhoek River Levels Update: Swelling from Northern France Continues to Affect Yser River

2023-11-11 12:13:21

River levels continued to rise in some places in the Westhoek. As expected, and despite the rain stopping, water from northern France continued to swell the rivers and the Yser.

The governor of West Flanders, Carl Decaluwé, therefore maintained his call for vigilance. However, the firefighters had a relatively calm night, the governor confirmed in the morning. Only a few places remained critical, such as Stavele (Alveringem), where rue de l’Yser remained under water and closed to traffic.

A few kilometers downstream, in Lo-Reninge, a resident and his son as well as their pets had to be evacuated from their house surrounded by floods, on the banks of the Yser.

Without further rain, the water should go down almost everywhere. The provincial phase of the emergency plan is still underway but West Flanders should have escaped the worst.
