Several fetal deaths and brain damage in five infants in French-speaking Switzerland are linked to placental Covid. Enhanced postnatal care is being implemented in the Vaud canton.
The Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) reported numerous intrauterine fatalities connected to Covid. The head of the hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynecology division, David Baud, stated that across French-speaking Switzerland since the pandemic’s onset, “five children have experienced significant brain damage.” As per a report in “24heures“, none of the mothers were vaccinated. Severe cases affect approximately 1% of pregnant women infected with a pandemic variant.
The identified cause is severe placental Covid, a placental infection impacting pregnant individuals who have contracted the virus, even mildly. This condition typically manifests within seven days of the initial symptoms. To ensure continuous observation of positive pregnant women without compromising isolation, the CHUV has implemented close monitoring via a partnership with independent midwives in Vaud, who conduct home visits to assess the baby’s wellbeing.
