Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian admitted he had been misled by promises of a ceasefire made by the United States (US) and Europe if Iran did not respond to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
He made the statement at a Cabinet meeting in Tehran on Sunday (30/9) evening, condemning the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Importantly, Iran has vowed a strong response to Haniyeh’s killing a day after he attended Pezeshkian’s inauguration ceremony in the Iranian capital.

Nasrallah was the target of a deadly bombing carried out by Israel in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday. The Lebanese group confirmed his death on Saturday.
Pezeshkian called it a heinous crime and said that this once again proves that the criminal regime does not comply with any international norms or framework.
He said claims by American and European leaders who had promised a ceasefire in exchange for Iran not responding to the killing of the former Hamas leader were completely false.

“Giving such criminals more time will only embolden them to commit atrocities,” he said, reported by Anadolu, Tuesday (1/9).
Iran’s president, who was in New York last week to attend a UN General Assembly summit days before Nasrallah’s killing, said Lebanon’s freedom fighters should not be left alone.
“I remain convinced that Lebanon’s fighters and freedom fighters should not be left alone in this battle, so that this cruel regime does not target one resistance state after another, shedding the blood of innocent women and children,” Pezeshkian was quoted as saying by the office. It also emphasized the great responsibility of Arab and Muslim countries in facing the atrocities committed by Israel in the area.
“Islamic countries must not remain silent about the crimes of this regime, because today it has become clear to the entire world community who the real criminals are and the causes of war, insecurity and murder throughout the world,” he said.
He also criticized the Western media’s double standards in dealing with Israeli terrorism. Pezeshkian further said Israel’s actions would not go unpunished, including the killing of senior Iranian military commander Abbas Nilforoushan, who was with Nasrallah at the time of the attack.
“A firm response to these treacherous criminals is necessary. History has shown that liberation and revival movements will not perish due to the assassination of their leaders,” he said.
The Iranian president also reiterated the full readiness of the country’s medical equipment and aid agencies to assist and provide assistance to Lebanese citizens who were victims of the recent bombings. (I-2)
