BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. —

Brooke Hancock Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission Executive Director Mike Paprocki visited Follansbee City Council on Monday night to present a project involving the Market Street Bridge.

The bridge was built in 1905 and within recent months has seen weight and height requirements lowered to enhance safety.

Paprocki said they are at the point of replacing the whole bridge.

We feel that there is probably not enough there to fix it,” Paprocki said. “There’s engineering problems and structural problems. Not many of us live to be 100 years old.

Paprocki received a call last week from the Department of Transportation in Charleston about money available from the bridge investment program that is part of the bipartisan infrastructure law.

To qualify for this program, the project submitted has to cost more than $100 million.

“This program can fund up to 50% of that project,” Paprocki said. “So, the DOH is submitting the Market Street Bridge as that project that needs to be replaced.”

According to Paprocki, each state is guaranteed at least one project out of the bridge investment program.

“So, we are hoping this bridge is West Virginia’s project,” he said.

Paprocki said he needs to spread the word and get letters of support as the application deadline is the end of next week.
