MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fifth-year seniors Kayza Massey and Julianne Vallerand of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team collected a pair of Big 12 Conference weekly awards, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
Massey was tabbed the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time in her career, while Vallerand earned her first career weekly conference honor as the Big 12 Defender of the Week.
The duo helped the Mountaineers go 2-0 last week, earning a 4-0 win over Oklahoma on Oct. 5, before securing a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma State on Oct. 8. Massey and Vallerand anchored the West Virginia defense and led them to a pair of shutouts once morest conference foes. The clean sheets pushed WVU’s total to seven on the year, including six at home. Massey played all 180 minutes of action last week, while Vallerand saw 124 minutes on the back line.
A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Massey recorded six saves across the two matches. Although she only recorded two once morest OSU on Sunday, she was integral in minimizing Oklahoma State chances by intercepting several of the Cowgirls’ crosses and corner kicks.
For Vallerand, the Terrebonne, Quebec, native recorded a huge team save once morest Oklahoma State, heading a ball out of the goal late in the first half to help salvage the clean sheet. She and the defense held OSU to just three shots on goal the entire match.
The Mountaineers (5-7-3, 3-3-1 Big 12) now prepare for their final road trip of the regular season with a two-game swing through Kansas. The trip begins in Manhattan, as WVU takes on Kansas State on Thursday, Oct. 12. Kickoff at Buser Family Park is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
