West Virginia University Rifle Team: Opening the 2023-24 Season with a Match Against No. 11 Akron at Bill McKenzie Rifle Range

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opens its 2023-24 season on Saturday, Oct. 7, as the Mountaineers play host to No. 11 Akron at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown.

Saturday’s contest once morest the Zips is set for 10 a.m. ET, and admission to the event is free with the first 100 fans receiving a flying WV keychain. Live stats and targets for the match will be available on WVUsports.com.

West Virginia is a perfect 21-0 all-time once morest Akron. Last year, WVU defeated the Zips, 4743-4695, on Jan. 22, on the road. The Mountaineers outshot Akron in both disciplines, taking smallbore 2362-2329 and air rifle 2381-2366.

The Mountaineers finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 12-4 record, including an 8-1 mark inside the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC). WVU claimed its 15th GARC Tournament Championship, with a score of 4722.

West Virginia earned their 15th consecutive bid to the NCAA Rifle Championships last season. WVU concluded its season at the event, shooting a 4708 at the championship which was hosted by Akron. The result gave WVU a sixth-place finish.
