West Virginia Men’s Basketball Struggles in 2023-2024 Season: A Closer Look at NET Rankings and Non-Conference Schedule

West Virginia men’s basketball has not had the start they pictured to their 2023-2024 season.

There was obviously the summer which involved a coaching change and major roster turnover, but aided by a suspension, a key injury, and a waiver denial, nothing has gone the Mountaineers’ way.

The NET Rankings are a computer ranking which the NCAA Selection Committee uses to help determine seeding in the NCAA Tournament.

West Virginia ranks 209th in the inaugural NET Rankings, which is the lowest ranking out of any Big 12 teams. Last season, WVU was 9th in the initial rankings, finishing the season ranked 24th in the NET.

The Big 12 commands the top of the rankings, with half of the league (seven teams) in the top-20 of the rankings. The conference also holds the top two rankings with Houston at No. 1 and BYU at No. 2.

Baylor is sixth, Iowa State is 13th, Cincinnati 14th, Kansas 16th, and Oklahoma is 19th.

Only three schools are not ranked inside the top 100, with UCF at 112th, Oklahoma State at 196th, and then West Virginia at 209th.

WVU’s schedule has opportunities for them to move up, as they face Pittsburgh (60th) on Wednesday, Mass (94th) on Dec. 16, and then Ohio State (20th) on Dec. 30, to close out non-conference portion of WVU’s schedule. All three of those games are either Quad 1 or Quad 2 games, which if they can win them, would be a big boost to their early season resume.

By the current NET Rankings, WVU is 0-1 in Quad 1 games, 0-2 in Quad 2 games, 1-1 in Quad 3 games, and 2-0 in Quad 4 games.
