TWO days before the opening of the XVII National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) which will be inaugurated by President Joko Widodo at the Manahan Stadium in Solo, the number of contingents has increased by one, from 34 provinces to 35 provinces. This is in line with the arrival of West Papua, which provides the final confirmation.
The participation of West Papua as the newest province in Indonesia has made this edition of Peparnas print new history. Because in the 2021 edition of the event in Papua, there are 30 provinces participating. Four years earlier, namely Peparnas XV in 2016 in West Java, which took part in 34 provinces.
As of Friday afternoon, 4,386 athletes and officials will be involved in Peparnas Solo. This figure will continue to increase, because not everyone has entered Solo. The last three contingents confirmed to come are Sulawesi, Gorontalo and West Papua.

The Chef de Mission (CdM) Meeting on Thursday evening confirmed the involvement of 35 provinces that will be participants in Peparnas XVII which will take place from 6 – 13 October in four regions in Greater Solo.
As of Thursday evening, it was recorded that 32 provinces had arrived in Solo, with a total of 4,386 athletes and officials, and had entered accommodation according to the sport they were participating in. In total there are 20 sports that will be competed in.
“The participation of these 35 provinces, all of which already have the management of the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPCI). This is a new history in the journey of Peparnas,” said the Chief Executive of Peparnas XVII, DB Susanto.

The General Chairperson of NPC Indonesia, Senny Marbun, welcomed the presence of 35 provinces as contingents for Peparnas XVII 2024. Currently almost all of them are present. The difficulty of 21 provinces sending athletes and officials to Solo has been resolved
“Almost everyone has arrived in the city of Solo. Even though initially there were 21 provinces that had difficulty sending their contingents, this was finally resolved. This is truly a new history of the Peparnas journey,” he said.
Senny appreciated the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian, Attorney General of the Republic of Indonesia, ST Burhanudin, and Deputy Attorney General for Intelligence, Reda Manthovani, who took part in helping the contingent’s difficulties in participating in this year’s edition of Peparnas.

In total there are 20 sports that will be competed in Peparnas XVII Solo 2024, namely Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Boccia, Chess, Bicycle Racing, CP (Cerebral Palsy) Football, Table Tennis.
Then there is Blind Judo, Para Weightlifting, Para Shooting, Para Swimming, Para Taekwondo, Sitting Volleyball, Tenpin Bowling, Wheelchair Fencing and Wheelchair Tennis. Two other sports, Para E-Sport and Wheelchair Basketball have exhibition status.
Competitions in 20 sports will start on Monday (7/10/2024). The day before, athletes and officials took part in a parade at the opening ceremony at Manahan Stadium Solo, Sunday afternoon which was opened by President Jokowi. (Z-9)
