The EODY is sounding the alarm about the West Nile virus, as according to the organization’s latest report, 4 new deaths have been recorded, while the first case was recorded in Attica. In fact, 7 patients are hospitalized in ICU.
A total of 76 cases
A total of 10 deaths from complications of the infection have been recorded, while a total of 76 domestic cases have been diagnosed and investigated, of which 57 cases presented manifestations from the Central Nervous System (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis) and 19 cases had mild/no CNS manifestations.
The median age of patients with CNS manifestations is 75 years. The youngest patient is 4 years old and the oldest 92 years old.
At the moment, 15 people are being treated, including 7 in Intensive Care Units.
The cases that have been investigated were recorded in settlements in the Regional Units of Larissa, Karditsa, Lefkada, Halkidiki, Pella, Serres, Kilkis, Imathia, Achaia, Thesprotia, South Sector of Athens, Argolis, Rhodope and in the Metropolitan Unit of Thessaloniki.
Finally, it should be noted that for each case of West Nile virus infection with an attack on the Central Nervous System, there are approximately 140 people infected with the virus with mild symptoms or asymptomatic. EODY has appealed to citizens to take individual protection measures against mosquitoes, as it is considered possible and expected to diagnose further cases in the coming period.
