West Nile virus

At the end of July, cases of this virus were detected for the first time in Gironde. This virus infection, also called West Nile virus, is a “notifiable disease”. It is transmitted by Culex mosquitoes. According to Santé Publique France, “mosquitoes become contaminated by feeding on infected birds”. However, there would be no “human-to-human transmission” of this virus. Normally asymptomatic, this virus can present with flu-like symptoms such as fever or joint or muscle pain. Still according to Santé Publique France, “neurological complications can occur in less than 1% of cases, particularly in the elderly or immunocompromised”.

The circulation of this virus is active in the region. As of September 26, 20 human cases have been identified, including 17 in the Gironde department alone. “Investigations are continuing for six other people,” reveals the ARS. Twelve cases were also identified in equine subjects and six in avian cases in the departments of Gironde and Charente-Maritime.

Virus infection

Also transmitted by mosquitoes, the usutu virus is also present in New Aquitaine. Cases were identified last August. As of September 26, the ARS confirms “six indigenous human cases”. Four live in Gironde, one in Landes and another in Charente-Maritime. Avian cases of this virus have also been detected in Vienne and Charente-Maritime. These indicators confirm “active circulation of this virus” in the region.

The virus is not very pathogenic and does not present a real danger to humans. This low pathogenic nature explains the low number of biologically confirmed cases.

Other viruses linked to mosquitoes

Mandatory notifiable diseases, chikungunya, dengue fever and even zika have also been identified in recent months. These viruses are transmitted by mosquitoes of the Aedes genus.

From May 1 to September 22, 2023, 89 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in our region, including 37 for Gironde, 11 for Charente-Maritime, 9 for Pyrénées-Atlantiques or even 7 for Landes and 6 for Dordogne. Traffic is very active. Only around thirty cases were identified last year for the same period.

Concerning chikungunya, 4 cases were recorded this year (two cases in Gironde, one in Charente-Maritime and another in Landes).
