Deputy Chairperson of KONI West Java, Yunyun Yudiana, announced West Java’s strong determination to score a hat-trick as overall champion at the 21st Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) 2024.

Yunyun explained that athlete development in West Java is not only the responsibility of the Provincial KONI, but also involves 27 city and district level KONIs.

“Athletes competing in PON come from regional coaching. Therefore, KONI cities and districts have an important role in preparing top athletes from below,” Yunyun said in her statement, Friday (13/9).

Yunyun revealed that the West Java contingent will depart with a strength of 1,252 athletes, supported by 350 coaches and 60 mechanics. However, he noted several obstacles faced, such as delays in catering services and inadequate accommodation in several sports, including rowing. Nevertheless, West Java athletes are still adapting to the existing conditions, including the hot weather which is quite familiar to them.

The funding for the coaching mostly comes from a grant fund worth 336 billion rupiah managed by KONI West Java.

“In addition to grant funds, financial support also comes from local entrepreneurs and local governments who directly provide pocket money to athletes,” he said.

Yunyun hopes that the people of West Java can provide full support for the athletes who will compete in PON XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024. He also emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and team cohesion in facing challenges during the competition.

“West Java is ready to defend the overall champion title and we hope for full support from the entire community to achieve the target of the most medals,” concluded Yunyun.
