Himeji Castle Announces Potential Ticket Price Hike

Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site in western Japan, is considering raising admission prices for nonresidents starting in 2026. The proposal, put forward to the local assembly on Friday, abandons an earlier plan to implement significantly higher fees specifically for foreign tourists.

The local government of Himeji aims to increase adult ticket prices from the current 1,000 yen (roughly $6.70) to a range of 2,000 yen to 3,000 yen. Simultaneously, they intend to make admission free for those under 18, currently priced at 300 yen.a This adjustment is projected to take effect around spring of 2026.

Trial Run of Digital Tickets

In addition to the potential price changes, Himeji Castle plans to introduce a trial run of digital tickets, incorporating designated times and dates for entry. This initiative will be in effect from April to October, coinciding with the World Expo hosted by the neighboring prefecture of Osaka.

Balancing Maintenance Costs and Accessibility

“I had been considering quadrupling entry fees for foreign visitors to cover maintenance costs,” Himeji Mayor Hideyasu Kiyomoto stated in June. However, the new proposal comes after some municipal assembly members expressed concerns about the potential negative impression such a drastic increase might create among foreign tourists.

Last fiscal year, Himeji Castle welcomed over 1.48 million visitors, with overseas visitors exceeding 400,000 for the first time since 1992 when records began.

Ultimately, the decision on the new admission fees for Himeji Castle will be finalized following the submission of the bill in March.

## Himeji Castle Ticket⁣ Prices: A Hike‍ on the Horizon?

**That’s ⁤pretty reasonable compared to other major attractions, wouldn’t you say?**

**So, why the possible price hike? What have you⁤ heard?**

**Sarah:** Well, it seems like rising ⁤maintenance costs, increased⁣ visitor numbers, and general inflation ⁤might be factors pushing for a price adjustment. Obviously, preserving a landmark like Himeji Castle requires continuous upkeep and ⁤investment.

**Do you think visitors would be understanding of a ‌potential price increase?**

**Sarah:** I ⁢think so, to a⁤ certain extent. People understand that costs go up, and most ⁣visitors I’ve spoken to are willing to pay a reasonable amount to access such a special place. However, a⁤ significant increase might deter⁤ some budget-conscious travelers.

**What’s your ⁢advice to those planning a⁤ trip to Himeji Castle in the ⁤near future?**

**Sarah:** I’d ⁣say keep an eye out for⁣ official announcements. If a price increase is imminent, it’s best to be ⁣prepared.
