West Indies World T20 hero Marilyn Samuels retired from cricket

Marlin Samuels, the batsman who led West Indies to the final of the World Twenty20 twice, has announced his retirement from cricket.

According to the report of cricket website Cricinfo, Chief Executive of the West Indies Cricket Board Jonny Grieve confirmed that Samuels had informed the board of his retirement in June this year.

Samuels played his last international match for the West Indies in 2018 and his career did not end in a memorable way even though he played an important role in making the West Indies the two-time T20 World Champions.

The batsman who led West Indies to victory in major matches scored a 56-ball 78 in the 2012 World T20 final against Sri Lanka in Colombo, which included 3 fours and 6 sixes.

In the final of the World Twenty20, Marlon Samuels was declared the man of the match for his brilliant innings in front of Malinga and Mendes.

After 4 years, Samuels repeated the history in the city of Kolkata, India, in the final of the World T20 against England, scored 85 runs off 66 balls and made the West Indies the world champion in short-style cricket for the second time.

Marlin Samuels also won the honor of being the best player twice in the final of the world cricket competition in World T20 2016.

He made his debut on 15 December 2000 against Australia in Adelaide and scored his maiden century at Eden Gardens at the age of 21.

In Test cricket, he scored 3 thousand 917 runs with the help of 7 centuries and 24 half-centuries and took 41 wickets while performing all-round performance.

Samuels averaged 32.97 in ODI cricket and represented West Indies in 207 matches.

He scored 5 thousand 606 runs and 89 wickets with the help of 10 centuries and 30 fifties in ODI cricket.

Samuels, who made West Indies the T20 world champion twice, played a total of 67 matches in the short-style cricket.

He has no century in his record in T20 but scored 1000 611 runs with 10 fifties, including 69 sixes and 144 fours while 89 runs without dismissal is his best innings.

The batsman, who has shown the best performance in important matches at the world level, last played an ODI on December 14, 2018 against Bangladesh.

Samuels also played his last T20 against Bangladesh on 5 August 2018 while the last Test of his career was against Pakistan in 2016 which was played from 30 October to 3 November.

Samuels also participated in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and was among the first foreign players to visit Pakistan in 2017.

He represented Peshawar Zalmi and expressed his desire to join the Pakistan Army while saluting them in his visit.

Samuels had addressed the chief of the Pakistan Army and said that “General, if you put a badge on my arm, I will come to Pakistan and whenever you want to make me a part of the army, I will be a part of the Pakistan Army”.

He said that ‘I am a general in Jamaica that’s why I was in army uniform in Lahore, I thank you and salute you’.
