It should stop raining in West Flanders on Friday evening, but the water should come from France via the various streams and rivers.

The greatest impact, however, is not expected before the early hours of Saturday morning. According to the governor, the necessary measures have been taken in the meantime. A second dam has been built in Stavele and sandbags are being distributed.

In Iseghem, the new dikes of the buffer basin are doing their job to contain the flooding of the Mandel. Additional pumping capacity has also been deployed on the Heulebeek. The water level of the Lys also remains at an acceptable level and continues to be monitored.

Protect residents as much as possible

All services remain on alert to intervene if necessary. “For the moment, everything is being done to protect residents as much as possible.“, explains Carl Decaluwé. A crisis meeting is planned for Saturday.

Residents were also asked to take the necessary measures and prepare well. They were therefore asked to limit travel and avoid dangerous regions, to cut off gas, electricity and water if necessary and to check that their phones were properly charged.
