West Bank: Israel demolishes 5 Palestinian homes on grounds of “building without a permit”

Palestine – The Israeli army demolished, on Thursday, 5 Palestinian homes in different locations in the occupied West Bank, under the pretext of “building without a permit.”

The sources reported that the demolitions took place in the governorates of Bethlehem and Hebron (south), and the northern Jordan Valley (northeast).

Eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency that “an Israeli force stormed the Hasaka neighborhood in the city of Hebron and began demolishing a three-storey residential villa.”

Witnesses explained that “Israeli bulldozers razed the villa to the ground.”

They explained that “the occupation claims that the construction process was carried out without a permit in Area C according to the Oslo Agreement” signed between the PLO and Israel.

Under the same pretext, bulldozers belonging to the Israeli Jerusalem Municipality demolished a house in the village of Al-Walaja, located between Bethlehem and Jerusalem, according to the head of the village council, Khader Al-Araj, in an interview with Anadolu Agency.

Al-Araj explained that “the Israeli authorities demolish Palestinian homes in the village on an almost daily basis.”

Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights organizations say that the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem grants building permits to Jewish settlements in the city, while tightening restrictions on granting building permits to Palestinians.

In the northern Jordan Valley, the Israeli authorities demolished three Palestinian homes built of tin, according to Palestinian anti-settlement activist Ayman Gharib.

Gharib told Anadolu Agency that the Israeli authorities claim that the houses were built without a permit.

According to the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission (official), “Israel demolished 318 facilities in the occupied West Bank during the first half of 2024.”

Israeli authorities prohibit construction or land reclamation in Area C without permits, which Palestinians say are almost impossible to obtain.

The 1995 Oslo II Accords divided the West Bank into three areas: “A” under full Palestinian control, “B” under Israeli security control and Palestinian civil and administrative control, and “C” under Israeli civil, administrative and security control. The latter constitutes about 61 percent of the West Bank.
