West Africa’s first fiber optic factory opens in Ogun

West Africa’s first and fifth fiber optic cable manufacturing plant has been inaugurated in Ogun State in the South West region of Nigeria. The plant, built by Coleman Technical Industries Limited in conjunction with an American company, Fiber Business, EMEA, is expected to spur innovation and the development of Nigeria’s digital economy infrastructure.

George Onafowokan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Coleman Technical Industries Limited, said the project was a response to the Federal Government’s call for rapid development of digital penetration in Nigeria and the drive to develop local content.

Trade and Investment Minister Niyi Adebayo, who was represented at the event, said Coleman Technical Industries Limited’s expansion from electrical wires and cables to the production of fiber optic cables used by telecommunications companies and other industries including defense and medicine for various applications in Nigeria and other West African countries is a confirmation of confidence in the federal government’s industrialization drive.
