At 2 o’clock in the morning, the hands will move forward one hour, it will be 3 o’clock and we will therefore lose an hour of sleep. As a direct consequence of this time change, the sun will rise later in the morning and set later in the evening.
Belgium has applied the system of summer and winter time since 1977. The main objective was that people benefit from daylight for longer and thus save energy. Opponents of this system point to the disruption of the biological rhythm.
In 2018, the European Commission proposed to remove this change and use the same time all year round. Polls showed that many Europeans were convinced by this idea. Member states failed to agree on which time zone to remove, however, and so the proposal was shelved. It was finally decided that each Member State might choose the timetable to be abolished. At present, in Belgium, no decision on this subject is on the agenda.
Many electronic devices will perform the time change automatically. However, if doubt persists regarding the official time, the exacttime.belgium.be site will help to dispel it.
