Wépion: a dozen rare trees devastated by beavers, nearly €2,500 in damage (photos & video)

The tranquility of rue du Suary, on the heights of Wépion, has been undermined for a week. In question, newcomers in the grove in the direct vicinity of his home: beavers. The latter are already attacking certain trees, thereby creating a dam in the stream crossing the small wood. But the rodents don’t stop there. “There is a small conduit under the road to pass the stream that crosses my garden towards the Suary, expresses the owner of the premises . It is this stream that the beavers go up. Once at the height of my garden, they find my trees.”

And trees, that’s not what is missing in Pierre’s garden. Passionate regarding horticulture, this retiree has planted nearly 600 trees in his 30-hectare garden. Ten of them were attacked by beavers.

Some are also rare species that cannot be found in the local nursery. ” There are some from England that are hard to find. “Unfortunately for him, rodents do not distinguish between rare trees and common ones.” They cut a Sorbus Wardii, a Tibetan species at nearly €125 a shoot, with a height of 7 meters. There remains only a strain cut in point, I did not find any branch in the garden. They also pruned me a magnolia, a liquidambar and attacked the bark of an ash tree. In total, I estimate my damage at €2,500. “

Pierre has installed trellises at the exit of his garden to prevent pests from coming to continue the massacre, hoping that the device will not contribute to blocking the conduit. ” I contacted the DNF (Nature and Forests Department) for them to come and move the beavers, but so far I have only obtained an exemption, as required by procedure. According to them, these are animals from France that follow the Meuse little by little. The cleanliness of the river being very good, their progress is rapid. Then, some go up the tributaries that they find and that are clean, as is the case here. What is amazing is that the stream that crosses my garden is considered a sewer. “

Pierre is not the only victim of the rue du Suary. A neighbor also saw her beech hedge lose a few trunks.
